With cold air in place here is what’s likely to follow

Now that the cold air has returned to our area all eyes will be focused on a developing coastal storm at the end of the week.

While today and tomorrow will provide sunny skies and cold temps in the mid to upper 30’s, the scene changes dramatically beginning on Friday.

Cloudy skies on Friday will bring some light rain to the area in the afternoon that is expected to change over to snow after sunset.

Snow on Friday night is highly likely and is expected to continue into the day on Saturday. Since we are still multiple hours away from the arrival of the wintry weather it remains too early to offer snowfall accumulation predictions with a high level of confidence.

Here is what is known at the moment.

  • The GFS model indicates a glancing blow to the east coast that could give our area on the Eastern Shore somewhere in the neighborhood of 3 inches of snow by Saturday morning.
  • The ECMWF is indicating a full blown blizzard for the coast with blowing snow and drifts.
  • The official forecast from the NWS is calling for total snowfall accumulations of 6 or more inches.
  • All sources agree that the heaviest snowfall will occur east of Interstate 95.

Bear in mind that the potential storm that models are following has yet to form and any effects from that storm are close to 60 hours away. It would not be prudent at this time to indicate certainty with regard to the forecast. Another 12 to 24 hours will make our weekend future more predictable.

Rest assured that updates regarding this forecast will be made here. Feel free to share the blog link (sbywx.blog) with others. Updates are also provided on Twitter by following @SalisburyWX.
