What would we do without the brightest of the brightest?

Each year on this date “Pi Day” is observed. Pi, the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter is one of mathematics’ celebrated constants that enables us to make accurate calculations with regard to anything of a circular nature, whether it be two or three dimensional in form.

For most calculations that a high school student would consider it is found that rounding the value of pi off to 3.14 is sufficient.

In more sophisticated applications of mathematics the value 3.14159 provides more precision.

In 1897 the state legislature in Indiana attempted to adopt a law that said that the value of pi should officially become 3.2, because…..get this, it would be easier for students to memorize.

The bill failed when a physics professor from Purdue University, who happened to be in the legislative session that day, convinced colleagues that it was a bad idea.

It goes to show you that opinions of politicians are not always wise. Sometimes, if not at all times, we need to call upon the experts. If not, we might be injecting bleach to rid us of COVID-19.

It is coincidental that the famous theoretical physicist and mathematician, Albert Einstein, was born on Pi Day 145 years ago today.

Let us salute Albert Einstein and the countless thousands of dedicated learners and researchers whose work makes us better able to understand the world in which we live.

The best of the best meteorologists are suggesting that today will be another beautiful day on Delmarva with temperatures reaching the mid 70’s.

Tomorrow will be warm as well with high temps in the mid to upper 70’s before some light shower activity arrives late in the day.
