The “Beacon of Hope” Harriett Tubman statue had been on display for several weeks in downtown Salisbury. It departed yesterday for its next stop in New Jersey.
It seems timely on this first day of February, “Black History Month”, that Tubman’s lifelong devotion to aiding enslaved Americans gain their freedom is remembered. While there still remain thousands of enslaved people around the world we must empathize with their struggles and call for them to enjoy the same freedoms that most of us take for granted.
Harriett Tubman spent many hours, days, and weeks on the Underground Railroad that led from Dorchester County in Maryland to upstate New York. She endured the same sorts of weather conditions that we deal with today. Imagine snow, wind, rain and even mosquitoes while trying to hide while you struggled to move people to freedom.
The weather in Salisbury today should be mostly sunny before becoming cloudy again tomorrow. Both days should see high temperatures on either side of 50 degrees.
Enjoy today’s sunshine and wait patiently for the groundhog to let you know how much winter remains at sunrise tomorrow morning.
Something to look forward to in February is the daylight we gain!☀️
