For your ice only!

Today will reach about 45 degrees under increasingly cloudy skies. As the evening arrives we will be facing a potentially hazardous period of wintry weather that includes nearly everything you can imagine.

Officially the National Weather Service has placed the lower shore under a Winter Storm Watch.

A mix of rain and snow is expected to develop late tonight with more snow than rain from Salisbury to points northwest. With temperatures hovering in the low 30’s some areas can expect to deal with freezing rain and perhaps ice.

Most of us in the Salisbury area can expect, at most, a light accumulation of snow and ice by the early morning hours on Thursday as it now appears that most of this evening’s precipitation will be in the form of rain.

The wintry precipitation should continue on/off during the day Thursday. Expect to see snow, sleet, and rain—perhaps some freezing rain, but mostly rain before a brief lull late in the day.

The heaviest precipitation is likely to occur late Thursday and overnight into Friday morning. The precip will be mostly snow, but sleet, and rain could mix in depending on your location.

As often happens during the winter, the battle between the cold air and warm air will prompt the rain/snow line to settle close to our area.

The winter weather event is going to last the better part of two days. The best guess this afternoon is that, when all is said and done, snowfall totals in Wicomico County are likely to average about 2 inches at most. Do not be surprised, due to the fickle nature of this system, if there is even less.

It is expected that the NWS may reduce their snowfall totals that are depicted in the graphic at the top of this post.

It is suggested that you keep an eye on the forecast over the next several hours as it is likely that modifications are to be made and snowfall accumulations adjusted.

You will find updates here as they are warranted.
