The hopes of a nation were uplifted in 1968 when Senator Robert F. Kennedy (Bobby) won the California Democratic Presidential Primary. Shortly after midnight, on this date 50 years ago, he was assassinated in Los Angeles…less than 5 full years after his brother, President John F. Kennedy, was gunned down in Dallas.
Earlier that year, the incumbent president, Lyndon Johnson chose to not seek reelection. The public outcry over America’s involvement in the Vietnam War had taken its toll. Bobby Kennedy’s death led to the ultimate election of Richard Nixon as president. America’s involvement in Vietnam ended before Nison resigned the presidency in August of 1974.
