A Laurel, Maryland shopping center was the scene of an attempted assassination of presidential candidate George Wallace on this date in 1972.  Wallace survived but remained paralyzed for the rest of his life.  Later that year Richard Nixon was elected to a second term as President of the United States..  We know how that turned out.
